Overview

The Great Silence is centered on Esperanza, Puerto Rico, the world’s largest single opening radio telescope, which transmits and absorbs radio waves from and to the farther ends of the universe. This location is also home to Amazona vittata, the only surviving wild colony of threatened Puerto Rican parrots in the Rio Abajo Forest. Allora & Calzadilla has cooperated with science fiction author Ted Chiang in a script that examines translation as an instrument for tracing and reflecting the irreducible differences between existing, non-living, human, animal, technical and celestial actors. In a fable’s spirit, the subtitled story presents bird’s observations of the search for life outside the planet, and uses the concept of vocal learning, something parrot and human alike, as a source of reflection on acousmatic voices, ventriloquisms and vibrations that form the basis of speech and the universe.
