Zack Mayo is a reserved, reserved guy who wants to be a navy pilot. Mayo meets abrasive, no-nonsense drill Sergeant Emil Foley as he arrives at training camp for his 13-week officer’s course. Mayo is a good cadet with a cold core, but Foley beats him up mercilessly, sensing that the young man might be prime officer material if he wasn’t so self-absorbed. Zack’s relationship with a working girl is often jeopardized by his refusal to offer to himself.
