Overview of the Situation

Angela’s Ashes is based on Irish expat Frank McCourt’s best-selling book, which follows young Frankie and his family as they try against all odds to escape hardship in pre-war Limerick’s slums. The family begins the film in Brooklyn, but after the death of one of Frankie’s brothers, they return home to discover the condition has worsened. Despite having battled for the IRA, prejudice towards Frankie’s Northern Irish father makes it impossible for him to find work in the Republic, and when he does, he wastes it on alcohol.
