Adele August, a single mother in this adaptation of the Mona Simpson book, is poor with money and much worse when it comes to making choices. Ann, her obedient daughter, is a good high school senior with Ivy League ambitions. Ann becomes upset with her mother’s reckless and impulsive behavior after Adele plans to pick up and relocate the two of them from the Midwest to Beverly Hills, Calif., to fulfill her hopes of Hollywood success.
