Overview
Cleopatra, the Egyptian Queen, wagers against Julius Caesar, the Roman Emperor, that her subjects are still strong, even though the period of the Pharaohs has past. She swears (against all logic) to create Caesar a new palace in three months. Edifis receives this ambiguous honor since all of her other architects are either too distracted or too traditional in design. He must build the palace and be paved in gold, otherwise he would be eaten by crocodiles. Edifis enlists the help of an old friend: Gaul’s legendary Druid Getafix, who concocts a wonderful potion that grants supernatural power. Asterix and Obelix join the old Druid on his trip to Egypt in order to assist and secure him. When Julius Caesar learns of the project’s success, he orders his soldiers to assault the construction site in order to win the bet to avoid losing face. He hasn’t counted on Asterix and Obelix, like the nearby pirates.
