Convict Robert Stroud faces eternity in solitary confinement after murdering a jail officer. Stroud’s life takes on fresh significance as he finds a sick baby sparrow in the exercise yard and helps it back to health. Since just getting a third-grade degree, Stroud went on to become a respected ornithologist and finds a better sense of independence and reason behind bars than other people do outside.
