Sarah, ten years old, and her parents are detained on the night of July 16, 1942, and taken to the Velodrome d’Hiver in Paris, where thousands of other Jews are being deported. Sarah, on the other hand, tried to shut her younger brother in a bathroom right before the cops arrived. Julia Jarmond, an American journalist in Paris, is assigned to write an essay on this raid, a black page in France’s past, sixty years later. She begins searching through files, and when looking through Sarah’s file, she finds a long-kept family secret concerning her own in-laws.
