His quest for Aya, an exchange student he encountered years ago in the United States, has influenced his decision. Yale University, 1961. Stanley Milgram devises a psychological experiment in which participants believe they are administering uncomfortable electric shocks to a friendly stranger strapped into a chair in another space. Despite his pleadings for help, the rest of the participants continue with the experiment, delivering what they believe to be a near-fatal electric shock merely because they are ordered to. With the trial of Nazi Adolf Eichmann airing in living rooms around America, Milgram’s study of people’s willingness to obey authority hits a chord in mainstream media and the science world. In some circles, he is lauded, but others accuse him of being a lying, malicious monster, but his wife Sasha stands by him no matter what.
