A enigmatic Dark Horseman is murdering young girls near Dikanka, and he has already butchered 11 of them. Nikolai Gogol, a scribe from Saint Petersburg, is tasked with leading the investigation; but, the closest he comes to cracking the mystery, the more fits he has, resulting in macabre visions. When he discovers that his beloved Liza is the next suspect, he fears his ability to defend her and resist the killer. Fortunately, he encounters Khoma Brut, the witch hunter, martial artist, and philosopher, who can assist him. They spend three awful nights together in an old church, reading the witch Ulyana’s funeral service and summoning the ghastly dark spirit Viy.
