Col. William McNamara, a fourth-generation Army officer, is held captive in a harsh German POW camp. Nonetheless, as the senior American officer, he controls his fellow prisoners, maintaining a sense of dignity in a position where honor is easily destroyed, all under the watchful eye of Luftwafe vetran Col. Wilhelm Visser. McNamara is silently plotting his retaliation against the enemy, never giving up the battle to win the war. A assassination in the camp offers him the opportunity to carry out a dangerous scheme. With Visser and the Germans diverted by a court martial, McNamara devises a clever plot to escape and disrupt a local explosives factory, enlisting the unwitting assistance of young Lt. Tommy Hart. McNamara uses a hero’s determination to complete his quest with his men, and is eventually compelled to balance the worth of his survival against the good of his nation.
