We are the empty ones, groping together and avoiding expression in this last of meeting areas. On this torrid river’s beach, a swarm of people has gathered.

Five young men wander through life in a tiny Italian village, dreaming of greatness. The group’s master, Fausto, is a womanizer; Riccardo yearns for fame; Alberto is a desperate romantic; Moraldo fantasizes about city life; and Leopoldo is a budding playwright. The other four blunder their way from one uninteresting encounter to the next as Fausto chases a string of ladies, much to the horror of his pregnant wife.
