Introverted Austrian author Jules strikes up a relationship with exuberant Frenchman Jim in the carefree days before World War I. Both men are smitten by Catherine, who is impulsive and charming, yet it is Jules who wins her side. Jim meets Jules, Catherine, and their daughter in their Austrian home during the war and learns that his feelings towards Catherine are not only intact, but still reciprocated.
