A deck of cards was the only item more threatening than a pistol in their possession.
Roy Huggins produced Maverick, an American Western television series with humorous overtones. The show starred James Garner as Bret Maverick, a deftly expressive cardsharp, and aired on ABC from September 22, 1957 to July 8, 1962. He was replaced by Jack Kelly as his brother Bart eight weeks into the first season, and from then on, Garner and Kelly alternated lead roles week to week, sometimes teaming up for the odd two-brother episode. The Mavericks were a group of Texas poker players who traveled across the American Old West and on Mississippi riverboats, often bringing themselves into and out of life-threatening situations involving money, women, or both. They’d usually have to choose between a financial windfall and a spiritual problem. Since both Mavericks were extremely ethical, their consciences always took precedence over their pockets.
