A woman and her daughter-in-law live when their son, Kichi, is at war by murdering samurai who wander into their swamp and selling whatever valuables they locate. When they discover that Kichi has died, they are both saddened, but his wife quickly starts an affair with Hachi, a neighbor who escaped the battle. When she can’t get Hachi for herself, the mother disapproves and uses a strange mask from a deceased samurai to scare her daughter-in-law.
