The Cannonball Baker Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, arranged by Brock Yates to oppose the 55 mph speed limit in place in the United States at the time, is the inspiration for a cross-country road ride. The Cannonball was named after Erwin G. “”Cannonball”” Baker, who raced his motorcycle around the nation in the Roaring Twenties. Many of the protagonists are based on ruses devised by actual Cannonball racers over the course of the event’s several years of existence.
