It all starts with a whisper.
Aibileen Clark, a middle-aged African-American maid who has spent her life raising white children and has recently lost her only son; Minny Jackson, an African-American maid who has always offended her employers despite her family’s financial struggles and her desperate need for work; and Eugenia “”Skeeter”” Phelan, a young white woman who has recently returned home after graduating from college. These three tales weave together to show how life in Jackson, Mississippi revolves around “”the aid,”” despite the fact that they are still held at a safe distance due to racial barriers.
