Overview
Ada McGrath and her young daughter Flora are left on a New Zealand beach with all of their possessions, including a piano, after a long journey from Scotland. Ada has been sold into marriage to Alisdair Stewart, a local man who has been deaf since childhood. Ada, who makes no effort to cozy up to Alisdair, is quickly smitten by his Maori-friendly acquaintance, George Baines, which leads to tense, life-altering conflicts.
