After years of pursuing serial murderers, FBI investigator Joel Campbell is burned out and shell-shocked, and he flees L.A. to start a new life in Chicago. Joel’s best laid plans, though, are cut short five months later when his new hometown becomes the scene of several especially horrific murders—murders that could only have been perpetrated by one man: David Allen Griffin. Griffin, one of Joel’s most enigmatic and cunning foes, has tracked down his former pursuer in Chicago to play a cruel game of cat and mouse. Griffin enjoys seeing Joel respond to any action as much as seeing his victims die, taunting him with photos of his intended victims and meticulously keeping his crime scenes clean of evidence to hold the cops at bay. As Griffin enters Joel’s inner circle, though, Joel must act immediately to deter him before anyone near to him becomes the next victim.
