Mark Renton’s heroin user stumbles through poor thinking and sobriety alongside his unreliable buddies – Sick Kid, Begbie, Spud and Tommy. He has a young sister, Diane, on the trip as well. After washing up and moving from Edinburgh to London, Mark discovers that he cannot get away from the life he left behind when Begbie appears in the lam on his front step, followed by a planned Sick Boy.
