Walter and Danny, two young boys, are left in the custody of their teenage sister, Lisa, after their father is called to work. They are ordered to sit indoors. When their house is fired into orbit, Walter and Danny are surprised when they start playing Zathura, a space-themed board game that they discover has magical abilities.
