At the end of the 1920s, in the North Carolina mountains, love-struck newlyweds George and Serena Pemberton proceed to develop a timber empire. Serena quickly establishes herself as a man’s equal, supervising loggers, hunting rattlesnakes, and even saving a man’s life in the desert. The Pembertons refuse to allow anything get in the path of their bloated affection and desires now that they have control and influence.
