In 1947, Stingo, a young novelist, relocates to Brooklyn to begin writing his first book. He discovers Sophie is a Holocaust survivor when he becomes friends with her and her boyfriend Nathan. From pre-war stability to Auschwitz, flashbacks show her horrific tale. In the present, as Stingo grows closer to Sophie and Nathan’s unstable emotional condition becomes more evident, Sophie and Nathan’s friendship is becoming more strained.
