The film centers on half-brothers Paco and Cruz, as well as their bi-racial cousin Miklo, and is based on the real life stories of poet Jimmy Santiago Baca. It begins in 1972, with the three characters as members of the “”Vatos Locos,”” an East L.A. group, which centers on how a violent activity and the influence of drugs affect their lives. Miklo is imprisoned and transferred to San Quentin, where he establishes a “”house.”” Cruz develops into a gifted musician, but a drug epidemic takes hold of him, resulting in disastrous consequences. Paco becomes a policeman and an adversary of Miklo, his “”carnal.””
