It’s 1943, and the German army hastily retreats from the Russian front, ravaged and demoralized. Conflict brews between the aristocratic though inevitably pusillanimous Captain Stransky and the brave Corporal Steiner in the middle of the madness. Stransky is the only one who thinks the Third Reich’s army is indeed overwhelmingly superior to Russia’s. Inside his haughty persona, though, lurks a quivering coward yearning for the Iron Cross so he can return to Berlin as a hero. In the other side, Steiner is arrogant, defiantly non-conformist, and more concerned with the welfare of his own citizens than with the plethora of military awards bestowed upon him by his superiors.
