Terry Malloy dreams of being a prize boxer while tending to his pigeons and doing errands for Johnny Friendly, the dockers union’s crooked manager. Terry sees a murder committed by two of Johnny’s thugs and then encounters the dead man’s girlfriend, whom he blames for his killing. She brings him to Father Barry, who wants to compel him to give evidence to the courts so that the dock racketeers will be prosecuted.
