The film focuses on the famed 1597 Battle of Myeongryang, which took place during the Japanese conquest of Korea (1592-1598), during which the legendary Joseon admiral Yi Sun-sin managed to defeat a total of 133 Japanese warships while commanding just 13 ships. The war, which took place in the Myeongryang Strait off the Korean Peninsula’s southwest coast, is regarded as one of Yi’s most significant victories.
