Overview
An examination of the nuances of passion in both its best and darkest corners, alternately sad and comedic. The film is set in the privileged beach neighborhood of East Hampton, New York, and chronicles one crucial summer in the lives of popular children’s book author Ted Cole (Jeff Bridges) and his lovely wife Marion. It is based on John Irving’s best-selling novel A Widow for One Year (Kim Basinger). Tragic events have strained their once-fantastic union. The pair has been unable to confront a much-needed improvement in their relationship due to her despondency and his ensuing infidelities. Eddie O’Hare, the young man Ted employs as his summer assistant, is the couple’s unwitting yet reluctant pawn – and, in the end, the impetus for their lives’ transition.
