Coleman Silk is a well-traveled and well-liked professor who loses his work after creating an unintentional racist slur. To clear his identity, Silk collaborates on a book with his friend and collaborator Nathan Zuckerman, who uncovers a dark truth that Silk has kept concealed his whole existence. Silk is having an affair with Faunia Farley, a younger woman whose troubled life threatens to undo the layers of deceit Silk has created.
