It’s a crime. Confusion and compassion are two words that come to mind as I think about these two words. They’re all really mental states.

Leland Fitzgerald, a reclusive young man, is jailed for the murder of a mentally ill boy who also happened to be Becky’s brother. Pearl Madison, a jail teacher, decides to write about Leland’s situation while the world tries to cope with the shooting. Meanwhile, those who have been upset by the crime, such as Becky and her sister Julie, must deal with their own issues.
