The future has already happened.
In the year 2035, prisoner James Cole reluctantly agrees to be sent back in time to find the source of a lethal plague that wiped out almost all of humanity and pushed survivors into underground societies. Cole is convicted and sent to a psychiatric institution after being wrongly referred to 1990 instead of 1996. There, he encounters psychiatrist Dr. Kathryn Railly and patient Jeffrey Goines, the son of a prominent virus specialist who might hold the secret to the enigmatic rogue squad, the Army of the 12 Monkeys, suspected of unleashing the killer plague.
