Through his Broadway column, New York City newspaper writer J.J. Hunsecker wields tremendous power over popular sentiment, but one factor he can’t influence is his younger sister, Susan, who is dating aspiring jazz guitarist Steve Dallas. Hunsecker is enraged by the romance and enlists the help of publicist Sidney Falco to find a way to separate the pair, no matter how brutal the process.
