Thomas Jerome Newton is an extraterrestrial that has arrived on Earth in need of water in order to preserve his home world. While working on a water transportation method, Thomas meets Mary-Lou, a quiet hotel clerk, and falls in love with her. Thomas is stopped by the US government just before he is about to depart Earth, and his whole scheme is jeopardized.
