This is the incredible tale of the men aboard the USS San Pablo who awakened the sleeping dragon of savage China as the whole of the world watched in horror.

Engineer Jake Holman boards the gunboat USS San Pablo, which is tasked to monitor a Yangtze tributary in the midst of exploited and revolution-torn China in 1926. His iconoclasm and cynicism clashes quickly with the ship’s ‘rice-bowl’ scheme and the tense symbiosis between Chinese and foreigners on the river. Hostility against the gunboat hits a pinnacle as the boat is forced to smash through a river-boom to save missionaries at China Light Mission upriver.
